CONNECT MUSIC FESTIVAL WILL RETURN AND HERE’S WHY
CONNECT FESTIVAL managed to stand out from the crowd for its first ever appearance and prove it was no ordinary music festival.
By mixing up the best in live music; from grassroot headliners, to up-and-comers, with everything from comedy and spoken word at the Speakeasy, culinary sensation, immaculate vibes in the ‘X Lounge’, to therapeutic treatments from leading experts in the field of Yoga, sound therapy and breathwork it proved to be a unique experience that theshowbizlion.com looks forward to attending next year.
The Connect Event Team were ecstatic at the response, with Event Manager, Katt Lingard saying: “After many months of planning, we’re so glad to have finally relaunched Connect Festival and what an incredible comeback weekend we’ve had. With a fantastic line-up of over 80 artists across six stages and thousands of incredible fans every day - it’s been special”.
“We’ve created something truly unique at the Royal Highland Centre site. Connect is about music, discovery, experiences and memories - showcasing an eclectic line up of comedy, spoken word, wellness and grassroots talent in a dazzling collection of intimate settings. It was just as special for the artists as it was for the fans, with some of the most positive feedback we've ever heard from across the line up.
“We’re so grateful to fans for their passion and commitment to live music, allowing us to bring Connect Festival back in 2023. We’re already thinking of ways to make it even better and I’d like to thank the artists, the fans and everyone who has worked extremely hard behind the scenes to make this festival happen. I can’t wait for next year already.”
Here’s the top ten moments from this year:
THE SMALL, MAGICAL ONES
“I love these ones, the small, magical ones when we’re in each other’s laps”, Jessie Buckley proclaimed at the Tiny Changes X Gardeners Cottage, an intimate crowd, Jessie beamed with the kind of joy only a Scottish audience can induce as she broke into a cover of Bob Dylan’s ‘Just Like A Woman’, accompanied by Bernard Butler of Suede fame, the stars truly aligned as this duo created soul bearing folk magic.
TAKE A DIP
For those early morning Connect campers brave enough, cold water therapy got their day started off right, albeit chilly. Immersing themselves neck deep in a 6ft long steel ice bath, revellers reconnected with themselves.
With afternoon showers pouring, TAAHLIAH made her way to the Unknown Pleasures tent. A leading figure in Glasgow and Berlin’s underground LGBT+ dance scenes’, she harnessed raw, electronica and sickly sweet hyper-pop beats to dazzle the crowd; who took no notice of the drizzle as they partied into the afternoon.
IT WON’T BE LIKE THIS ALL THE TIME
Walking out to thunderous bass and roaring cheers, The Twilight Sad, lead singer James Graham’s signature twangy Glaswegian vocals permeated into the very heart of The Grand Parade crowd on Friday night. Accompanied by Frightened Rabbit drummer Grant Hutchinson, they dedicated their cover of ‘Keep Yourself Warm’ to anyone struggling with mental health.
TAKE A SEAT AT THE CHEF’S TABLE
Chef Barry Bryson invited Connect fans to a special pop-up dining experience, as he masterfully took restaurant concepts and fine dining triumph to an event level - pairing classic Scottish flavours with contemporary flare - for those who enjoy the finer things, it was not to be missed as he served up apple smoked sea trout, fish cakes and locally produced strawberries and milk chocolate.
“OH GOOD LORD”
The modest Speakeasy tent was spilling out on Sunday afternoon as comedian Troy Hawke made his debut. Strutting on stage, he was adorned in a purple silk smoking jacket, saying “Something you’ll notice about me is that I have the ability to blend in seamlessly to my environment”, admiring his attire he grins - the crowd hanging onto every word of his uniquely bonkers routine.
PRIORITISE PLEASURE
“You have been f*****g lovely Connect”, screamed pop sensation Self Esteem. Recently shortlisted for the prestigious Mercury Prize for her acclaimed album ‘Prioritise Pleasure’, she cut across the main stage with razor sharp precision, infusing edgy choreography with powerhouse vocals and tongue in cheek lyrics - there may just be a new Pop Queen on the horizon.
FIND YOUR INNER ZEN
When not singing along to your favourite band, or discovering an up-and-comer sure to make their way to your playlist, Connect fans were transported into a journey of calm and personal wellness as leading expert Cat Boyle, brought her expertise, offering vinyasa yoga at the Rest & Be Thankful tent.
CRAWLER
Celebrated post-punk legends, IDLES served a searing, white hot energy on Connect’s opening night. In colossal fashion, the band brought their brutal post-hardcore sound and, shaking with energy, lead singer Joe Talbot commanded The Grand Parade as revellers descended into a glorious chaos of sound.
A TINY CHANGE, ONE BIG MOMENT
Mid-day struck and the cryptic announcement was out, ‘Secret Set Added - 7:45pm at the Tiny Changes x Gardener’s Cottage’. Rumours swirled as alt.rock heroes, The National took to the intimate stage for a performance of cult classic’ About Today’ and ‘This Isn’t Helping’. With roaring applause, The National’s Aaron Dressner said “It’s a pleasure to support Tiny Changes… this charity is amazing and any awareness we can raise for mental health, we want to do that because we all struggle with it.” What a way to see out Connect 2022.
LET’S RECONNECT SUMMER 2023

A WILD SCOTTISH ROAD TRIP AWAITS
IMAGINE getting in the car and going on a wild Scottish road trip…
At theshowbizlion.com we love a spontaneous adventure and with flights still in chaos, driving yourself to your destination seems like the ultimate in adventure.
Research from one of the UK’s largest and most trusted car buying service providers has revealed a list of the best cars for a spontaneous wild camping road trip this summer, for travellers hoping to hop in their car and sleep on the road. The study scored 15 of the largest cars across the estate, SUV and MPV categories using three different metrics, to reveal which make and model is the best for ‘wild camping’, and for completing some of the UK’s northernmost road trips. The CitroĂ«n Berlingo MPV topped the list, followed by the Land Rover Discovery, and Skoda Superb Estate.
The Citroen Berlingo MPV has been crowned the UK’s best car to wild camp in during summer road trips, after one of the UK’s most trusted car buying services scored 15 of the most popular estates, SUVs, and MPVs for ‘sleeping on the road’ suitabilities. Each car was ranked on; boot/bed space when the rear seats folded down, average fuel consumption, and the total payload (weight) each car is able to carry.
The brand behind the research, ChooseMyCar.com, has released the list, alongside an interactive map of the best wild camping spots in Scotland, to remind cash-strapped Brits that their car might be perfect for a spontaneous camping trip this summer, minus the camping gear.
Scotland, famous for its epic North Coast 500 & South Coast 300 driving routes, is the only country in the United Kingdom that allows wild camping, making it the perfect destination for holiday makers looking for a cheap but scenic escape.
Researchers from the brand identified; sleeping space, fuel economy, and total carry load as three vital factors for people to consider when selecting a wild camping vehicle, to ensure a comfortable, efficient and cost-effective trip.
They then scored each car on three metrics; boot space with the rear seats folded down, average fuel consumption, and the total payload each car is able to carry, in order to give each car a unique ‘tour score’ out of 45.
The top ten cars for camping in, and their unique tour score, are:
Citroën Berlingo - 44
Land Rover Discovery - 30
Skoda Superb Estate - 29
Mercedes GLE - 28
BMW 5 Series Estate - 27
Skoda Kodiaq - 26
Peugeot 5008 - 26
Skoda Karoq - 23
Dacia Duster - 20
Mercedes E Class Estate - 19
A full list of the most suitable cars, and a map of the best routes in Scotland for wild camping, can be found here:
Across the top three vehicles, the brand also considered how much it would cost to complete some of Scotland’s most iconic road trips.
In a CitroĂ«n Berlingo, it would cost; £85.92 to complete the North Coast 500, £51.55 to complete the South West Coastal 300, and £42.96 to travel the North East 250. In the Land Rover Discovery, which has an average MPG of 21, it would cost; £204.57, £122.74, and £102.29 to drive these iconic routes, more than double the cost of taking a Berlingo. In the Skoda Superb Estate, it would cost; £107.40, £64.29, and £53.58 to finish these road trips, respectively.
The Citroën Berlingo MPV topped the list for boot/bed space, boasting 3,000 litres of room when the rear seats are folded down, as well as coming in second place for fuel efficiency and maximum payload, with an average MPG of 50 and a total payload ranking of 896 kilograms.
Despite finishing second from last for fuel economy, the Land Rover Discovery was the second best car overall. It boasted an impressive total boot space of 2,406 litres, and came in third for payload, with a total carry weight of 808 kilograms.
Skoda is the most successful brand across these three metrics, with three of their models in the top ten.
Nicholas Zapolski, Founder of ChooseMyCar, said,
“At ChooseMyCar our mission has always been to help drivers across the UK find the perfect car for them, whatever their needs or situation. That’s why we decided to make a list of the best cars for a spontaneous, cost-effective getaway - we wanted to show people that, regardless of the weather, or if you’ve got accommodation booked, you can always use your trusty car as a makeshift home.
“We looked at the biggest types of cars to ensure people would have enough leg room to be comfortable. I’ve got to say I was surprised to see the Berlingo at the top, as I’d assumed the long wheelbase of an estate would lend itself to camping the most - but it's clear to see why it makes the perfect wild camping vehicle .”

THE ESSENTIAL GUIDE TO PACKING LIGHT
HOLIDAY packing can bring out the stress in all of us so here’s a handy guide to help you fit everything you need into your luggage, large or small.
If you like travelling light or just want to avoid extra luggage charges, versatile items of clothing are a holiday staple. They can be re-worn multiple ways during the trip, and they take the stress out of packing – your suitcase is ready for anything. But what exactly fits the bill of the perfect low-maintenance wardrobe?
Here, we delve into the essentials to keep you relaxed for your travels.
Mixing and matching: The must-have items
Your suitcase checklist:
Bringing versatile items for your trip is useful, of course, but going the extra mile and wearing them for your flight is going to give you the maximum amount of room in your luggage. Linen shirts are an essential item for your low-maintenance travel wardrobe, as the fabric absorbs moisture and dries very quickly, so you can be sure that you aren’t too hot and bothered on your flight, as well as during your days under the sun on your trip. Plus, the versatility means that you’re still dressed appropriately for your late-night drinks – no need to head back to your accommodation to change your outfit!
Chino shorts are an essential pairing for your linen shirt that will combat the classic plane discomfort. Thanks to the cotton offering stretch and flexibility, comfort is ticked off the list, which will particularly be useful for long-haul flights. They also prevent you from filling your case with more night-time clothing, as they can be re-worn with your linen shirt for activities on your trip – not to mention it’s a dashing combination when you need to fit with a smart dress code.
On the other hand, your chosen destination may require you to be slightly more covered up – in this case, chino trousers are the answer to all of your problems. The material is comfortable, and you can also rest assured knowing that you’re being respectful to the rules of the area. Non-iron chinos are a wise choice to match with your shirt to avoid creases; the smart and clean look is promised all day long.
Worried about being slightly chilly as you travel? Match a V-neck jumper with your shirt and shorts as an extra layer. Of course, it’s a stylish look – but you needn’t worry about feeling too cold on the way to your destination, and it can even work as a layer for evenings on your trip if you’re expecting a cooler climate.
Thanks to your airport attire, that extra room can be filled with a classic pair of denim shorts, yet another item that you can wear for different occasions, whether that be for a spot of lunch or a trip to a beach bar. Pair these with your linen shirt and you’re certain to get heads turning.
Alternatively, a simple t-shirt will match both your denim shorts and your chino shorts. Your life is made easier given the opportunity to mix with different items – and not only will it match well with your V-neck jumper when you need to layer up, but it will also keep you cool and comfortable while travelling.
Essential hues for your wardrobe
Considering the colours for your low-maintenance wardrobe is something you must not forget. Although you may want your luggage to be bursting with bright colours, it’s simply impractical, as it makes mixing and matching difficult. However, you can still throw some striking looks together without being too bold.
White is the ultimate colour to choose for clothing. It’s a shade that you can rely on to match any other colour, and it’s got the power to achieve a sleek and sophisticated look. This will come in handy for your linen shirt in particular if you’ve got plans to head to a sophisticated restaurant. Additionally, it’s bound to last you all day long, even in the heat, as white is one of the best colours to wear to keep cool.
But it’s unrealistic to opt for white for every item of clothing. Beige goes perfectly with white as it is a neutral shade, and the combination of light-hues is fitting with shades of summer– so you will no doubt look fashionable. Consider this for your bottoms, whether that be shorts or trousers.
Throwing a third colour into your low-maintenance wardrobeto achieve the full mix and match potential might seem challenging, but it’s easier than you think. Baby blue is another neutral shade, yet it adds a splash of colour to bring your outfit together. This is ideal for your jumper or your denim shorts to match your tops.
If you’re keen to be slightly more adventurous with your colours, incorporate olive green into your wardrobe. It remains in the neutral zone to stay matching, but it’s just the right amount of daring. This is certain to be a striking colour for your t-shirt to pair with your beige chino shorts.
Comfort, style, and versatility are covered with these items and colours to save you the hassle of taking too many itemsand spending hours packing. Your low-maintenance travel wardrobe is ready for any destination!
