SIX BY NICO MERCHANT CITY GLASGOW HAS ARRIVED

SIX By Nico have opened their new flagship restaurant in Glasgow’s Merchant City - and they launched with a Mad Hatters Tea Party.

Theshowbizlion.com has watched the ascent of Six Company, the Glasgow-based company behind the Six by Nico restaurants, since thry began their incredible journey in 2017.

Now, having  opened fifteen sites throughout the UK and Ireland in the same time frame, the brand is moving into a new phase with a new look Six by Nico restaurant in its hometown of Glasgow.

The new Six by Nico Merchant City on Albion Street will provide the experience guests all know and love in elegant surroundings that compliment all aspects of their product.

An earthy and inviting interior  is inspired by the number SIX, and designers Studio Two developed ideas for Six by Nico by using the six-legged dragonfly as its muse, honing in on characteristics of the insect's body form, colour, and natural habitat.

As Six by Nico continues to develop the brand across multiple venues, restaurant sites will gain a harmonious design style whilst maintaining individuality inspired by locational concepts.

Since St Andrew's Square, Saltmarket, and Trongate are all part of the neighbourhood known as Merchant City with its rich history around trading goods such as tobacco, sugar and salt, designers opted for an earthy, rich colour palette inspired by the tobacco leaf.

Authentic timber panelling is influenced by mahogany cigar cases, fixed seating is upholstered in antiqued leathers reminiscent of opulent home lounges and joinery pieces are embellished with antiqued brass hardware. Furniture pieces are complimented by plush patterned fabrics like those seen in the wealthy merchants homes.

Studio Two said, "We're excited to be working on such dynamic schemes with a strong creative brand who continue to push boundaries within their sector".

Every six weeks, Chef Nico and his team completely reinvent their food offering, serving a brand new six-course tasting menu, each one themed around a different location, memory, or idea.

The menus combine different ingredients, flavours, and dishes to create a brand-new dining experience, drawing inspiration from both home and abroad. Every six weeks, foodies in Glasgow will be treated to a completely new six-course menu at the new Merchant City location, with the first concept theme based on The Mad Hatter's Tea Party.

Six Company Chief Executive and founder Nico Simeone said, “Our team is driven daily by the challenge to constantly create and reinvent. We are dedicated to being different, never resting on our laurels, and continuously striving to create the best customer experiences. Marking our six-year journey with such a significant evolution of experiences in our home town and reaffirming our commitments to the city seems like the best way to celebrate the next stage in our company vision.“

Since launching their first restaurant in 2017 in their hometown of Glasgow, Six by Nico has served over 350,000 customers across the city's locations in Finnieston, Byres Road and Glasgow Southside and a staggering 2 million dishes.

The Six by Nico brand has created 49 tasting menus since the conceptual brands launch in Glasgow and raised over £700,000 in two years for the groups charity partner Beatson Cancer Charity. Since the partnership's inception less than two years ago, the restaurant group and their customers have raised funds across their fifteen Six by Nico locations in England, Scotland, and Ireland as well as 100% of the proceeds from the Beat 6 restaurant in Glasgow Bearsden going directly to Beatson Cancer Charity.

GLASGOW’S THE DHABBA GOES FOR MINI DISHES ON NEW MENU

Glasgow’s Dhabba restaurant is launching a brand new tapas style Small Bowl menu.
The North Indian venue in Glasgow’s Candleriggs is introducing Laghu Kund to its discerning customers from Sunday July 21.
The menu is designed for groups of diners who want to sample a whole load of dishes or curious individuals who want to try out more than one dish.
Owner Navdeep Basi said: “Small plate menus offer a greater choice for customers and can lead to a more communal dining experience too. You can order one of two dishes with a drink or go all out with five or six bowls for full on dining. Everything on our menu is cooked freshly to order and we wanted people to be able to try some new dishes as well as old favourites. We had fun making a little promo video to go along with it although obviously our small bowls are a bit larger than the ones we made for the video.”

On the new Laghu Kund (Small Bowl) menu you can try anything from Street Food dishes like Koliwada Jheenga with crispy king prawns, Hariyali Mokal with basil and lemon chicken and Dahi Bhalla lentil dumplings to Seafood like Rasedar Macchli Seabass fillet and Ajwaini Macchli Scottish monkfish.
The restaurant also has a whole lamb section with delights like Laal Maas including red chillis, onions and poppy seeds and Paneer, Chicken and Vegetarian sections to the menu.
Diners can then choose accompanying breads, rice, salads and pickles to complement their dishes.
Bowls range in price from £3.45 to £9.95 and Dhabba’s kitchen is nut free with some gluten free options too.

NO PHOTOS AT GLASGOW CLUB

Beverley Lyons
A Glasgow club is so underground that punters are asked not to take pictures.
Rost in Glasgow at 49 Bell Street has already been running for three months and those in the know have already partied till the wee small hours in its bunker like space.
The club which has a capacity of 270 has already played host to art school degree show bashes as well as some big name private parties but you’d never know unless you’d been.
Director Paul Sweeney said: “We opened for three months without being on social media. We wanted to drive things underground and provide a safe space for the city’s creative and leftfield crowd.”
The club is so underground that guests are asked to adhere to a no photos policy.
Paul said: “We request that people take no photographs and ask them if we can put a sticker on their camera phone before they come in. Everyone is always receptive to that.
“If we are hosting a gig that is a bit different, but with regards to our clubnights we like of give people the anonymity they deserve.
We’ve been opened a few months and have a  capacity of 270 in our main room. We also have an application pending to introduce a new cafe bar offering for Glasgow’s Merchant City within the premises.”
The interior of Rost, which means rust in German, has walls that oxidise over time.
It’s very industrial and stripped back so that art students and club promoters can provide their own colour if need be.
The club is fully operational every Friday and Saturday but has been hosting events on Thursday and Sundays as part of the art school degree programme.
This Sunday it plays host to a founding member of the famous Acid Jazz label who is who playing a special DJ set.
Eddie Piller is not only one of the founding members of the famed Acid Jazz label (along with Gilles Peterson), he’s also a founder of the legendary Blue Note club.
Acid Jazz started off the careers of The James Taylor Quartet, JamiroquaiBrand New Heavies and many more.
He’s a man who brings serious clout with him and the Merchant City club  are thrilled to have been able to secure him for a four hour long DJ set from 10:30pm.
Eddie, who recently performed a set for Lauren Laverne on Radio Six music who will also be featuring the event, is just part of Rost’s celebrations for the Glasgow Jazz Festival.
The club also celebrated with an official after party for Mulatu Astatke at the fest on Friday.
Paul said: “This is our first year of involvement with the Jazz Festival. For a jazz based event the club has the atmosphere anyone would look for - a low ceiling basement with great acoustics. Our  live content is based on us providing a place for mostly electronic and visual performance.
On Sunday we welcome The Glasgow Improvisers Orchestra at 7:30pm for a full show before Eddie Pillar takes over for his set.

SCOTS INDIAN RESTAURANT THE DHABBA TO GO NUT FREE

A Scots Indian restaurant is the first to go completely nut free in its dishes.
The Dhabba in Glasgow’s merchant city has become the first Indian restaurant in Scotland to offer people with nut allergies a kitchen where no nut dishes are manufactured.
Owner Navdeep Basi and his staff at the North Indian restaurant have ensured that no nuts will be used in their kitchen.
They have also contacted their suppliers to check how they process food in a bid to eradicate nuts in the ingredients they receive from elsewhere.
And whilst they cannot guarantee 100 per cent that some foods have not been packaged in facilities where nuts exist, they have tried to minimise the risk of this.
Navdeep said: “We are very conscious about the needs of our customers and the growing demand for nut free meals. At The Dhabba our chefs have found another way of making quality dishes that taste a lot better and have a similar texture.
We have even contacted our suppliers to check how they process food in a bid to eradicate nuts in the ingredients. We have tried out utmost to minimise the risks of having any nuts in our food and our kitchen process has been rigorous. There will no nuts or even mustard seeds used in our kitchens at all.
The only allergens on our menu now are a small bit of gluten, dairy and egg and we have recently launched a separate brand new vegan menu which has a wider choice.
A note on the restaurants menu now reads: “All the foods on our menu are prepared without using nuts, peanuts, sesame, mustard, celery, lupin and sulphites. Our standard operating procedure ensures that all the ingredients we use in our kitchen are free from these allergens. However, please note that some of the products we procure may have been packaged in facilities that also handle some of these allergens.”

GLAGOW RESTAURANT TRIBECA FEATURES IN NEW TV SHOW

Beverley Lyons
GLASGOW restaurant business TriBeCa can’t wait to be featured in a new BBC Scotland drama set in the city’s Bell street and Albion Street.
The American diner and neighbouring buildings will be filmed as part of new BBC Scotland show Guilt which will be filming in the Merchant City on April 12, 15, and 16.
The contemporary drama is being filmed by Expectation Entertainment and Happy Tramp North and broadcast on the new digital channel.
Production bosses have told TriBeCa and other businesses that their street will form part of the aftermath of a fire scene.
As well as mock fire engines and a squad of fake firemen the street will be made to look like it has endured the spray of hoses.
TriBeCa manager Colin Drummond said: “It’s pretty exciting. We got notification about the filming today and we can’t wait to welcome BBC Scotland to the Merchant City. Our staff will all be making sure we look our best for the occasion. We recently relaunched our menu so this gives us an excellent opportunity to showcase the unique and vibrant atmosphere of Glasgow’s entertainment district to the world.  We hope that viewers enjoy the drama ‘Guilt’ and that, after seeing us on telly will visit the entertainment hotspot of Scotland.”
A spokesperson from the production company said: “We have sought and been granted permission by Glasgow City Council to implement a road closure for the duration of these scenes. This particular scene will look like the aftermath of a fire. There will be two fire engines parked on the road and extras dressed as firemen. There will also be a wetting down of the pavement and road.”
Any parked cars will be cleared from the area ahead of filming.
Road closures on Bell Street and Albion Street are expected between 2pm until 8pm on April 16.

SCOTLAND’S BIGGEST GLUTEN FREE PANCAKE IS HERE

Beverley Lyons
Could this be Scotland’s biggest gluten free pancake?
Dakhin South Indian restaurant in Glasgow’s Candleriggs will be making loads of the special South Indian crepes this pancake day.
Known as dosas, they are made from rice, lentil, a little bit of sugar and salt so are gluten free.
They can be filled with mashed potatoes, chicken, lamb, seafood or even ice cream, or other treats for those who like a bit more sugar.
And although staff reckon they’ll be serving up hundreds this pancake day, the special crepes are available all year round.
At two to three feet in diameter have you ever seen anything this big?
Rakesh Kandari from Dakhin said: “Dosas are a very popular dish in South India and only take a few minutes to make. They are maybe a bit big for people to make at home but they are ideal for hungry customers who want something more than the average plateful.”

ESCAPE REALITY BRINGS HORROR AND MORE TO GLASGOW'S MERCHANT CITY

BEING handcuffed and locked in a room with five other people might be the stuff of nightmares- but for theshowbizlion.com it was the essence of our dreams.
Not that we're into bondage orgies or anything too sinister, but the thrill seeker in us absolutely loved every minute of our hour long ordeal at Glasgow's Escape Reality.
Situated in the bowels of the Merchant city - across 4,000 square feet of the underground vaults of the city’s Merchant Square to be precise - the premium escape experience offers punters something a bit different from the usual pre-club activity.

Open from 12pm during the week and 10:30am weekends until 10:30pm the experience boasts several themed rooms, with varying levels of difficulty, to choose from.
Daredevils can attempt to escape from the tremendously tricky Alcatraz, face Jack the Ripper in Murder in Whitechapel, or work out the mind-boggling puzzles in the Jumanji-inspired Jungala. We ended up in the scary Enigmista room which in told is like the horror film Saw, with its blood stained walls and other delights and our hearts raced as we tried to solve a variety of puzzles to escape from a potential death (obviously they don't actually kill you).

It's scary stuff that makes your brain work that wee bit harder and once you've tried it you won't be able to stop returning. It's just as well they have around 60 different games for you and your pals to try...
They've also got a private bar if you need some Dutch courage before or after.
