Shamshad, arrived to Glasgow from Lahore when she was 14 years old and taught herself English.

STILL GAME STAR GAVIN MITCHELL TALKS MURDER IN GLASGOW

Boaby the Barman may be no more but Still Game’s Gavin Mitchell is still numb.
He said: “It’s not sunk in if I’m honest. We finished a few weeks ago and then I got the lurgy.”
I met the lovely Gav at the 35th anniversary celebrations for STV’s famed detective series Taggart.
Seamore Neighbourhood Cinema had taken over Maryhill Community Central Hall for the occasion and Gav was in esteemed company alongside show creators - writer Glenn Chandler and producer Robert Love.
Gav told  me: “I actually appeared three times, in three roles on the show, as a barman of course and then a pathologist Robin Carlisle Forbes who was actually kind of posh, and then as a gangster kind of businessman which was a brilliant storyline.
He added jokingly: “He was nice but a bit like me, so er, don’t cross me or I’ll break your nose with a pool cue.”
As we sat watching the first ever episode of Taggart - then a three part mini series called Killer in 1983 - it struck me just how brilliant it was - and how timeless the writing still is. Only the dodgy patterned wallpaper was a bit out of date.
Gav said: “Robert and Glenn both created Taggart, so to be with the creators thirty five years on in Maryhill in the community Central halls is phenomenal. To be in Jim Taggarts stomping ground, in his hood with his creators is refined company indeeed. It’s a bit like being with Keith Richards and Mick Jagger and I’m the Ronnie Wood of the company. I’ll always be the newbie.”

STILL GAME’S FORD KIERNAN DOES A BOABY THE BARMAN AT GLASGOW PUB

FORD Kiernan did his best impression of Boaby The Barman on a night out in Glasgow.
The Still Game actor who plays pensioner Jack in the BBC series couldn’t resist getting behind the bar at Nico’s for a cheeky pint or two.
The star is a regular at the haunt and even popped in unannounced with some of the other cast members to the Still Game quiz night they used to run.
Bar co-owner Stevie McColm said of his Friday night visit to the Sauchiehall Street haunt: “Ford was in good spirits when he paid us a visit on Friday. He was chatting with punters about the latest series and dancing away as he enjoyed some drinks.”
We joked about him getting behind the bar like Boaby The Barman and he decided to pour himself a pint of Guinness. It could be said that he was even better at it than Boaby himself.”
Ford also told a group of girls that he loves a bit of techno.

GOING WILD WITH GAVIN MITCHELL, PAOLO NUTINI, JESSIE WARE, TIMELESS CANDLES

THE LYONS SHARE
Gavin Mitchell’s brilliant Still Game character Boaby The Barman might have had a heart attack with 18 stents, but the actor is very much alive and kicking.
He was on top form as we gabbed away following his appearance on The Wright Stuff this week.
It’s great to see another one of our own on the Channel 5 UK wide show.
Gavin revealed that his appearances on the panel are all down to a weird twist of fate.
He explained: “Matthew is a huge fan of Still Game and told Jonny Freeman who I was with in MI High. When Still Game Live 2 was on at the Hydro Matthew even came up to watch it with his wife.”
It gets weirder, as Gavin revealed: “I was in London to see David Bowie’s art collection and walked into a pub on Primrose Hill. I overheard someone telling their friends that Still Game was fantastic and that they needed to watch it. I tapped the person on the arm to surprise them and it was Matthew. He was freaked out and so was I. It was insane, a complete and utter coincidence and he invited me on the show there and then.”
Gavin has now appeared on the show twice but he says he finds it hard to muster up an opinion on some topics. He laughed: “You’ve got to fight against yourself for the sake of it.”

JUNGLE VIP
SAY You Love Me singer Jessie Ware was er, worse for wear after losing her voice following her gig at Glasgow’s Fruitmarket.
The Fifty Shades of Grey hitmaker emerged from the Merchant City venue tired but in great spirits.
She had warned fans it wasn’t worth waiting around for her as she had to rest her voice under doctors orders.
However, Jessie still managed a smile as she came out the  venue and walked to her tour bus while inhaling steam from a clay pot to help her vocal chords.
She will return to Glasgow for TRNSMT festival this summer.
THE WEEK’S PRIDE
YOU can’t beat a loveable doggy and I met a little hero this week at STV.
The incredible Mitch is a retired rescue dog with the Trossachs Search and Rescue team and has served his time looking for people stuck up mountains and under rubble.
The border collie who is now a wee bit deaf helped out at the Glasgow Clutha after the awful helicopter crash.
He once trained as a drugs dog but didn’t make the cut, although he still has a penchant for looking into handbags.
He’s becoming a bit famous now - having met David Hasselhoff during his panto run at the SEC and also recently starring in a Bollywood Film - Tum Bin 2. His owner Stuart Ballantyne admitted the on set catering was incredible - with a homemade curry each day.

PURR
I’ve had a few late nights this week and my voice dropped a few octaves. Thankfully it came in handy when I was asked to do the voiceovers for The Scottish Style Awards which take place this weekend in Glasgow’s incredible Kelvingrove art gallery and museum. I had to try out different voices from smiley to serious, formal to casual and it’ll be interesting to see what works on the night. It’ll be even more interesting to see what I end up wearing. No pressure!

JUNGLE DRUMS...
IT was a low key affair as Paolo Nutinicelebrated his mum Linda’s sixtieth birthday this week.
The New Shoes and Iron Sky singer joined Linda and dad Alfredo to party with some of their closest friends and family.
Rather than a Paisley location near their home, they opted to come to Glasgow and took over The Savings Bank in Bridge Street.
As well as bringing him up, the lovely Linda has played an important part in Paolo’s career -  being responsible for signing his first recording contract - as Paolo was too young to be legally recognised.

BIG CATS
I don’t really do football, politics or religion but I did have the pleasure of hanging out with two Scots playing legends this week.
Former Rangers man Gordon Smith and former Celtic man Jim Melrose had a quick lunch meeting and bite to eat in Glasgow’s Dhabba restaurant.
Both former rivals are now working together on lots of projects including a new disinfectant business.
They took great delight at spraying their antibacterial foot spray inside one of my shoes, leaving my sock slightly damp.
I didn’t feel right about asking them to spray the other one.
Speaking of their friendship Gordon said: “We used to be against one another but we became team mates at Manchester City and moved to England at the same time.”
Jim said: “We were against one another at one point when I was at Partick Thistle and Gordon was at Kilmarnock. Now we’ve got a bromance - although I prefer to be in less of the spotlight than Gordon.”

IN THE LYONS DEN
My wee pal Gail Porter made a flying visit to her homeland of Scotland to complete some work with John Hartson that had been delayed during the snowy weather.
She also revealed it was her 47th birthday week and had been given two books by her daughter Honey - Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine and The Girl Before.

WHAT EVERYONE IS GOING WILD FOR...
Excuse me for waxing lyrical but...I felt like one of the Kardashians as I popped into Fraser’s department store after hours for an evening with Timeless Candles.
The fab fragrance company had taken over the wooden panelled boardroom to show off their two latest products.
They decked it out with blossoming trees and candles galore and it smelled divine. Scottish born owner Liana Mullen, who started the company in 2014 to create scents for her beauty salon clients, told me she’s had a few odd requests to create candles for different people and companies.
Amongst those she can mention were a scent for Loch Lomond golf club using ingredients from their walled garden and a sensual candle in Black Plum Pomegranate for someone who wanted to spice things up in the bedroom.
Liana got each of us to recall our favourite smells from childhood and I kept thinking fondly about my dad’s cigars when we had visitors.
Her two new scents are at polar opposites. One is to energise and invigorate while the other is to calm and relax. I opted for the Lemongrass and Lavender candle (£35) even though I’m already hyper. Palmarosa and Rose Geranium is perfect as a pillow or room spray to calm you at the end of the night. (£17)

STILL GAME'S JACK AND VICTOR GIVES SCOTS PATIENT SPECIAL SUPPORT

A Scots hospital patient with a rare genetic disease was thrilled to bits when she received a get well message from Still Game's Jack and Victor.
Sharon McNeilly, 43, from Cumbernauld suffers from the rare condition Von Hippel Lindau syndrome, an inherited disorder causing multiple tumours, both benign and malignant in the central nervous system.
Only 4-500 people in the Uk suffer from it and symptoms of the condition include headaches, problems with balance and walking, dizziness, weakness of the limbs, vision problems, and high blood pressure.
Sharon who has already had four brain operations to remove rumours as well as spinal surgery is due to go in for adrenal and whippes surgery on Monday.
Her husband Andrew who is recovering from cancer himself bumped into actors Ford Kiernan and Greg Hemphill as they filmed around Glasgow this week and asked if they would send a special message to her.
The lads went one better by videoing themselves in character delivering a humorous get well message that looks like an excerpt from Still Game.
In their message Greg says: "Hello Sharon we hear that you are recovering from a major operation."
Ford adds: "We're here to say we're wishing you all the well in your recovery and we hope that you're Still Game."
Greg then continues: "That's right Make sure you get lots of rest and that this dumpling makes all your teas and all your dinners and all your breakfasts. Get your goonie on, your telly on. Get well soon darling.
And Ford who then jokingly breaks his walking stick in half chips: "Otherwise I'll be snapping the stick.
Sharon who managed to get home for a few days from hospital before the big op said: "I can't stop smiling about this. Ford and Greg are absolutely fantastic and I've been a fan of Still Game ever since it first was performed as a stage show years ago. I'm absolutely over the moon that I have a personalised Jack and Victor message."
Sharon's husband Andrew added: "The lads were only too happy to put a smile on her face in between filming. I've had a similar operation to my wife's when I had cancer and I know it's a big op. She had to take time off her job at SSE Scottish Hydro as a result of her illness and had been trying to stay positive throughout this. Ford and Greg really managed to make her smile with their unique message."

STILL GAME'S CAST AND CREW GIVE HINTS ON WHO WILL DIE IN NEW SCOTTISH SERIES.

STILL Game cast and crew have been giving subtle hints as to who might die in the new series - and they are suggesting it might not be of old age!

It's been revealed that someone will kick the bucket in the new series of the BBC show and bookies Ladbrokes have even been taking bets on who that might be.
Now as filming reached its final day Jane McCarry and the crew have been tweeting a series of pictures teasing fans about who will go.
Jane McCarry held up a make up set marked Autopsy Palette as she told fans: "Ye seeing that? The autopsy palette. Ohh the plot thickens.. a suspicious death per chance?"

And series producer Jacqueline Sinclair also showed off a menu from the set that appeared to also suggest some kind of mysterious Denise. Dishes from the set included Don Coreone Pasta parcels in a Betrayal ragu (gluten free)
It looks as if Craiglang's latest victim doesn't necessarily die of natural causes.

STILL GAME ON THEIR STATESIDE DREAM

Exclusive
STILL Game's Jane McCarry, Gavin Mitchell and Mark Cox say they'd love to film in Vegas for the new series of Still Game.
Mark said:,"Its pretty much out there that we are going to be doing s new series and we'd probably like to see a filming in Las Vegas episode for the new series."
The trio were guests of the Young Scots awards in association with the Sunday Mail.
They presented the environmental award to young wild explorer Zeki Basan.
Gavin said: "It's been quite emotional. I'm environmental daft."
Rather than stay till the wee small hours Gavin joked they were going back to his to have some spicy soup.

FORD AND GREG WANT NEW STILL GAME STAGE SHOW TO BE MORE THEATRICAL

Ford Kiernan and Greg Hemphill decided not to record their new stage show because they claim the last one felt 'a bit flat' when they watched it back on a screen.

The Still Game: Live 2 show is on at Glasgows SSE Hydro from February 4-16 and Ford said: "We wanted it to be a theatrical experience and we felt when we saw the DVD played back from our last show that there was a third hand feel to it. It was all there but there was a flatness about it we were not entirely comfortable with when we saw it back.

Greg added: "This show is kind of unique in that it's the first time we've done Still Game where it hasn't been been recorded. All the TV episodes we've recorded are obviously on DVD and the original stage show we did at the festival in 1997 is also on DVD but this is uniquely theatrical and by the fifteenth of February it will be gone forever. It kind of feels good. That's how theatre should be. I know you can go to the GFT and watch a big production because people can't go to London and whatnot but I think theatre has to be experienced live.

"You can watch Kevin Bridges or Frankie Boyle on a DVD because you are used to seeing them live. It's them and a mike so it's not that much of leap to watch a DVD of them live but to watch a theatre show with lots of actors, you've got to be here."

The two actors who play Craiglang pensioners Jack and Victor in the comedy admitted there was a huge pressure on them to fulfil the expectations of their audience.

Ford said: "There is a huge pressure because everybody raved or passed comment on the last one and said they had a terrific time and a big part of the audience is repeat business who have been before so we've got to keep them entertained and surpass what we've done before."

Greg added: "It feels like a very different animal from the TV show but that has its own pressure and it feels like we are used to that. When the show was on, people loved it and there was the pressure to continue it at the level we were at and there was the pressure to bring it back after seven years and now we are doing the stage show again, it's got to be fresh and different and are kind of used to it and thrive on it .

The duo also suggested a new series of Still Game may soon be on its way.

ROBERT BURNS WOULD FIT INTO CRAIGLANG WITH JACK AND VICTOR

STILL Game's Isa reckons Rabbie Burns would love a night out at The Clansman with the rest of the Craiglang pensioners.
Actress Jane McCarry who plays the gossipy shop cleaner in Navid's corner shop appeared at Ayr racecourse Burns Supper to reply on behalf of the lassies.
Speaking of Scotland's National Bard who has brought us gems like Tam O' Shanter and Ae Fond Kiss, she said: "Rabbie would love a night at the Clansman. With a wee goldie in his hand, one of Boabby's microwaved pies and the bonny Isa and Peggy to gaze at over the puggy."

Jane even reckons Still Game creators Ford Kiernan and Greg Hemphill should make a special edition of the show dedicated to the Ayrshire lad.
She said: "A Burns night Still Game special would be a great idea. Boabby would mix up some tinned haggis with some pedigree Chum and we would all be happy. Jack and Victor would do the immortal memory, Winston would toast and Isa would reply."
The Ploughman Poet and his tartan bunnet might well fit in perfectly to the surroundings of Osprey Heights - and we could see him having a good old chinwag with Isa and her pals.
Jane who appeared at the bash with Grant Stott, said: "My favourite Burns night tradition has to be the immortal memory...as long as it's not too long. I genuinely love Burns and I've heard so many different versions of the immortal memory over the years and I've always come away with some new information. That and the haggis of course."

STILL GAME'S TAM IS IDEAL DATE BAIT

HE might be an unlikely sex symbol but Still Game's Tam Mullen has appeared on dating site Plenty Of Fish.
The Criaglang pensioner might be attached to librarian Francis but that hasn't apparently stopped him advertising his wares online.
We're not sure if the cheeky punter who put up his pic on their profile has had much success in the pulling stakes yet but at 70 Tam who is a hospital DJ isn't exactly the ideal date material as his miserly ways mean you'll be the one paying for the drinks.
One time he even pretended he had bad arthritis which prevented him getting his hand into his pocket.
As a pal of Jack, Victor and of course Winston he has a solid group of pals but don't expect big night out - he likes to spend time in the pub and the bookies.
Actor Mark Cox who plays the character claims he had nothing to do with the dating profile but he joked: "Smashing-Get him Pumped!"

STILL GAME GETS NEW TITLES AND MUSIC

STILL Game producers got together with the world-renowned BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra to make the new title music for the show.
And they engaged the services of BAFTA award-winning TV & film composer Ben Foster.
Recorded last week at the City Halls in Glasgow, home to the BBC SSO, Foster arranged and orchestrated the new titles, re-recording the Frank Chacksfield song ‘Cuban Boy’.

The track has long been associated with the Still Game series since its debut in 2002, originally using a version by The Cuban Boys.
The new title music was conducted by BAFTA award-winning British composer, Ben Foster whose TV and film credits include Doctor Who Live, Torchwood, Prometheus and The Grey, amongst others.

The iconic opening titles of Still Game which see evergreen pensioner pals Jack Jarvis and Victor McDade (Ford Kiernan and Greg Hemphill) age through the years, have also been reshot for the new much-anticipated seventh series.
The new titles remain faithful to the original style seeing Jack and Victor through the ages from schoolboys, to teens and adults in the 60s, 70s, 80s to the present day.

Jacqueline Sinclair, Producer, said: “Jack and Victor may not have aged and the original titles have been fabulous for 14 years but as the whole series is getting a polish, we really needed to make the titles sparkle for HD widescreen televisions too. The re-recording of the title music has been the icing on the cake and it really did bring a tear to my eye to hear it being performed live!”

Joan Morrison, Orchestra and Events Manager for the BBC SSO, added: “We are thrilled to be a part of the new series of Still Game and had great fun recording the soundtrack. The orchestra plays a vital role in contributing to programmes across the BBC, entertaining and enlightening audiences throughout Scotland, the UK and beyond.”
After a nine year hiatus, Still Game returns to BBC One on Friday October 7.

NO DOWNTON ABBEY VOICES AS STILL GAME RETURNS TO NETWORK

Beverley Lyons
STILL Game is finally returning to our screens after a nine year gap and although Isa will now be using Google and the show will now be networked Ford Kiernan and Greg Hemphill reckon the series will remain the same.
It's the news we've all been waiting for as BBC Scotland’s iconic comedy series returns to BBC One this year with a new six-parter starring all the original cast.
The new series will film from July 4 at BBC Scotland’s Dumbarton Studios in a purpose built set – the first time the comedy has filmed there – and will air on BBC One later in 2016.
Ford told the showbizlion: "Time has moved on but Jack and Victor's age hasn't. We're hoping to get back and that the audience are as comfy as they are when we left, like pulling on an old pair of slippers or going into a warm bath.
"Greg said: "It's the longest that we've probably ever spent on one series of Still Game. We started writing scripts in November and are filming in July so we wanted to get it exactly right. It's as if no time has passed from 2007 till now. "
"I don't know about it being funnier than ever really, but we are happy with the scripts. We worked harder on them than before. We were on a treadmill before and have had a lot of time to polish these scripts and get it right for newer audience and keep the chore audience happy."
Ford and Greg will reunite to play pensioners Jack Jarvis and Victor McDade for the sitcom which last aired on BBC One in 2007. The new series will also see the return of Still Game favourites Jane McCarry as Isa, Sanjeev Kohli as Navid, Gavin Mitchell as Bobby, Paul Riley as Winston and Mark Cox as Tam.
The series will now be networked but Ford and Greg claim they're not about to get posher or use subtitles so others can understand their Glasgow accents.
Ford said: "We're not going to start talking like Downton Abbey."
Greg added: "The show is what it is. We've been at great pains to look after our core audience. We've tried to expand it as well."
Ford joked: "There are lines like (in posh accent) 'I'm just nipping down to Navids for some totties' but we are trying to keep it down to a minimum. We couldn't possibly do it. They asked us to do the network for what is is not what it might become."
The two Scots talents can't wait to get their make up on to play their older counterparts but they admit they need less slap than when they first started.
Greg said: You can step back into the characters but we need less make up now."
Ford laughed: "When we started doing the characters at the Edinburgh festival we took two hours to get our make up on and when we did the Hydro it was forty minutes.
Greg added: "It's unique in that sense that we can park it and return.
We don't want to leave it for another nine years again. We love it and the rest of cast and Audience who watch it love it too. Hopefully they are back for good.
Ford joked: "It's always difficult to tell the mortgage people you've taken nine years off. I'm probably the only person whose used PPI."
The lads also claim the series will be updates slightly to fit in with modern times.
Greg said: "Time has moved on and the world turn and we will turn and there are contemporary issues like demolition and the changing face of the community. Isa has the internet and was Google before Google existed. There will be nods to those kind of things because we live in the present day.
Ford chipped in: "You could make a Scottish search engine and call it Isa."
He added: “We’re super happy to come back with the show - we had no idea how much it had been missed until we played the Hydro! Myself and Greg are really excited about getting the gang together again and we are putting our all in to make our fantastic audience feel like we’ve never been away.”
Greg Smiled: "We are thrilled to be given this opportunity, with the full support of the BBC Network, to don the bunnets once more! On behalf of all the cast, I'd like to thank Still Game fans for keeping the show alive after all these years. We'll save a seat for you in the Clansman."
The new series of Still Game will be a BBC in-house production and was commissioned by Shane Allen, Controller of Comedy Commissioning. Shane welcomes a Still Game reunion. He said: “A comedy phenomenon, Still Game’s return is much-anticipated as we, once again, meet up with Jack, Victor and their friends. The new series revisits one of the most iconic comedies of its time, a show which holds a very special place in the hearts of our audience. Ford and Greg are an exceptionally talented writing partnership and we’re looking forward to catching up with Jack and Victor after all these years.”
Ewan Angus, BBC Scotland’s Commissioning Editor, TV and Still Game executive producer added: “It’ll be fantastic to see Ford, Greg and the rest of the gang getting up to more comedy capers in Craiglang. Our audiences love Still Game. Whenever we show past episodes we are guaranteed big audiences and I know this new series will again delight Still Game’s legions of fans.”
The new six-part series will be executive produced by Ewan Angus, BBC Scotland and Steven Canny, BBC Comedy. It will be directed by long-time Still Game collaborator Michael Hines and produced by Jacqueline Sinclair.
Following a mammoth 21-night run of live shows at Glasgow’s SSE Hydro Arena in 2015, audiences have been waiting in anticipation for Still Game to make its TV return.
The original run of the sitcom, which stars Kiernan and Hemphill as evergreen Glaswegian pensioners Jack and Victor, aired for six series between 2002 and 2007, transferring from BBC Scotland to BBC Two. The new series of Still Game will air on BBC One network when it returns later this year.
